Mushabbar A. Syed, MD, has joined the Albany Med Health System in a prominent role as chief of Albany Medical Center’s Division of Cardiology. He will also serve as the George E. Pataki Endowed Chair of Cardiology and director of advanced cardiac imaging at Albany Medical College.

Dr. Syed is known for his expertise in general cardiology with a focus on coronary artery disease, valvular diseases, congestive heart failure, myopathies, and adult congenital heart disease. His interest lies particularly in using cardiac MRI, CT, and echocardiography for diagnosis and management of heart conditions.

“Dr. Syed’s expertise in advanced cardiac imaging, combined with our leading-edge imaging technology and highly specialized cardiac and radiological teams, presents tremendous opportunity to grow our cardiac imaging capabilities and opens the door to further education and research in the field of advanced cardiac imaging,” said Edward Philbin, MD, professor and chair of the Department of Medicine. “This thoughtful collaboration among disciplines strengthens our ability to provide comprehensive, individualized care to each patient and further positions us as a leader in cardiac care.”

Before joining Albany Med Health System, Dr. Syed was affiliated with Loyola Medicine in Chicago where he directed cardiovascular imaging at Loyola University Medical Center. He also developed fellowship programs at Stritch School of Medicine. His previous roles include founding director of cardiovascular CT and MR imaging at the University of Kentucky and director of cardiac imaging at Emory University Hospital.

As a mentor to medical students and faculty members alike, Dr. Syed anticipates contributing significantly to educational opportunities within the System. “It’s an incredible honor to join such a talented and dedicated team to work together to expand and elevate the clinical, educational, and research programs of the Albany Med Health System,” Dr. Syed said.

Dr. Syed will participate in a newly established System-wide cardiovascular steering committee aimed at enhancing efficiency in cardiac care across the network.

His academic background includes fellowships at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda for cardiovascular MRI training; he was chief fellow during his cardiology fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit after completing an internal medicine residency there as well.

An accomplished researcher with numerous publications including textbooks on cardiovascular MRI under his belt; Dr. Syed holds memberships with various professional societies such as serving on national committees for American College Cardiology while chairing Society Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance’s education committee too among others like being founding member Society Cardiovascular Computed Tomography Association Pakistani Descent Cardiologists North America etcetera
