New York Attorney General Letitia James has issued guidance to New Yorkers who wish to support relief efforts for the recent flash flooding in central Texas. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) cautions against fraudulent charities that may exploit the situation and advises donors to ensure their contributions go to legitimate organizations.
Attorney General James expressed her sympathy, stating, “My heart breaks for the Camp Mystic families and all Texans impacted by this devastating flash flooding, and I am grateful to the first responders who have jumped into action to care for their neighbors.” She urged New Yorkers to be vigilant against scams and donate only to reputable organizations. “I encourage anyone who experiences any issues when donating to reach out to my office,” she added.
The OAG provides several tips for safe donations:
– Verify email solicitations by contacting the charity directly or visiting its website before providing personal information or credit card details.
– Exercise caution when donating through social media or fundraising sites. Research the organizer’s identity and confirm the charity’s approval for using its name or logo.
– Donate only to familiar charities and review their financial reports on OAG’s website.
– Inquire about how donations will be used, including which services and individuals will benefit.
– Be cautious with newly formed organizations that may lack experience or infrastructure.
– Confirm authorization before making text message contributions.
– Avoid giving cash; instead, donate via check payable to the organization or through its website.
– Protect personal information when donating over phone, text, or internet.
Suspicious organizations can be reported by filing a complaint with the Charities Bureau or calling 212-416-8401.
