The New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation (OSI) has begun an investigation into the death of DaShawn Larode, who died on November 17, 2025, after an encounter with New York City Police Department (NYPD) officers in Brooklyn.
According to information released by the Attorney General’s office, NYPD officers responded to a 911 call early in the morning reporting an injured person outside an apartment building on Thomas S. Boyland Street. Upon entering the building, DaShawn Larode allegedly opened an apartment door and fired a shotgun at the officers, grazing one officer’s face. The officer then discharged his service weapon and struck Mr. Larode, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The injured officer received treatment at a local hospital and has since been released.
“Pursuant to New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI assesses every incident reported to it where a police officer or a peace officer, including a corrections officer, may have caused the death of a person by an act or omission. Under the law, the officer may be on-duty or off-duty, and the decedent may be armed or unarmed. Also, the decedent may or may not be in custody or incarcerated. If OSI’s assessment indicates an officer may have caused the death, OSI proceeds to conduct a full investigation of the incident.”
The office noted that these are preliminary facts and are subject to change.
