General surgeon Kinga Powers, MD, PhD, has joined Albany Medical Center as the chief of emergency general surgery and will also serve as an associate professor at Albany Medical College.
Dr. Powers is a board-certified surgeon who specializes in minimally invasive and robotic surgical techniques. Her expertise covers complex gastrointestinal and abdominal conditions, including various types of hernias and benign esophageal diseases such as GERD and reflux. She also handles revisional and restorative operations for patients who need specialized care after previous surgeries. Dr. Powers focuses on laparoscopic, endoscopic, and robotic procedures to provide tailored treatment options that aim to reduce pain, shorten recovery times, and improve outcomes for both urgent and scheduled surgeries.
Her training includes a fellowship in advanced laparoscopic and bariatric surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center affiliated with Harvard Medical School. She completed her residency in general surgery as well as a doctoral degree at the University of Toronto. Her research there centered on cell signaling during oxidative stress and shock resuscitation. Originally from Canada, Dr. Powers received her medical degree from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.
Dr. Powers currently chairs the publications committee for the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons and serves on several committees related to surgical education and safety. In addition to her clinical work, she has participated in mission trips to Bolivia and Peru where she performed advanced laparoscopic surgeries while training local surgeons.
