Mayor Carmella R. Mantello announced on April 3 that the Frear Park Golf Course will open for the 2026 season on Friday, April 10, marking the start of a new season for one of the Capital Region’s popular recreational sites. Alongside this announcement, Mantello revealed that Brad Stevens has been selected as the operator for both the temporary and future permanent restaurant and event space at Frear Park.
The reopening of Frear Park Golf Course is seen as significant for golfers, families, and visitors in Troy. The city is continuing to invest in improvements to enhance visitor experience at the park.
An opening ceremony is scheduled for 9:00 AM on April 10 at the course. Mayor Mantello will be joined by local high school golf teams and park staff, with Mantello set to hit the first drive of the season from the first hole tee box. “There is a tremendous amount of excitement surrounding the opening of Frear Park Golf Course,” said Mayor Mantello. “Frear Park is a true gem of our city and the entire Capital Region. As we welcome everyone back for the 2026 season, we are also continuing to invest in the park’s future – ensuring an even better experience for golfers and visitors alike for years to come.”
Brad Stevens was awarded operation rights after a competitive process. He will manage “On The Green Pub and Grub” in a temporary tent during 2026 while preparing to operate a permanent restaurant expected to open in summer 2027. “It’s an honor to be selected through this process and to continue being part of Frear Park’s future,” said Stevens. “Opening day is always an exciting time, and we’re proud to operate once again ‘On The Green Pub and Grub’ for the 2026 season… We’re looking forward to building something special here for the Troy community.”
Legislation authorizing this contract will be submitted to City Council on April 3rd, with demolition of former facilities expected within a month as part of ongoing revitalization efforts.
The golf course remains important economically with thirty large tournaments planned this year; golf contributes nearly $13 billion statewide annually. Other upgrades underway include new playgrounds—such as what officials say will be “the Capital Region’s first all-inclusive playground”—tennis courts, pickleball courts, signage improvements, public grills, accessible hiking trails enhancements, parking expansions,
and more public meetings are planned regarding these changes.
Mantello thanked staff involved in maintaining Frear Park: “I want to sincerely thank the Frear Park team for their hard work and dedication… they take great pride in keeping Frear Park beautiful and welcoming – not just for Troy residents but visitors from across the Capital Region and beyond.” Residents can book tee times by contacting the pro shop or visiting troyny.gov/Golf.
