Today, a group of New York representatives, including Elise Stefanik, Andrew Garbarino, Nick LaLota, and Mike Lawler, expressed their disapproval of recent developments in the State and Local Tax (SALT) negotiations. In a joint statement, they criticized the Speaker and the House Ways and Means Committee for proposing a flat $30,000 SALT cap without prior notice or agreement.
The representatives stated: “We’ve negotiated in good faith on SALT from the start—fighting for the taxpayers we represent in New York.” They expressed concern that this unilateral proposal could jeopardize President Trump’s legislative efforts: “It’s not just insulting—it risks derailing President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill.”
The New York representatives emphasized that residents of their state contribute significantly more to federal coffers than they receive in return. They argued that increasing the SALT cap is essential for fairness rather than being an indulgence. Concluding their statement, they firmly rejected the proposed offer: “A higher SALT cap isn’t a luxury. It’s a matter of fairness. We reject this offer.”
