For Belinda Spinner, a registered nurse, hiking has been a regular activity, with frequent walks in the woods. When she discovered that her colleagues Michelle Richards and Heather Giorgianni, also nurses at Glens Falls Hospital, shared her interest in hiking, they decided to explore local trails together. Their first hike took place at Stewarts Ledge in Lake George during the full moon of 2021.

Spinner described the experience as “peaceful and rejuvenating,” particularly amidst the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic. Recognizing the importance of personal wellness and physical exercise during such times, they were inspired to share this activity with their coworkers.

This led to the formation of Darn Tough GFH, a group organizing monthly hikes for hospital staff. Initially attracting clinical staff, the initiative soon saw participation from various departments like human resources and education, fostering stronger interdepartmental relationships.

Richards noted that these hikes have united colleagues across different levels of the organization. The group began with short hikes but has since adapted based on participant feedback. They’ve introduced additional activities such as sunset or moonlit meetups and yoga sessions. Hikers are encouraged through challenges like climbing Fulton Chain mountains or completing the Lake George 12.

Darn Tough GFH provides an annual schedule well in advance and offers hikes on alternating weekends to accommodate varying work schedules.

In 2023, the founders received recognition as one of Glens Falls Hospital’s Nursing Teams of the Year. The group was also acknowledged for community service efforts including guiding for Lake George Land Conservancy and tree planting projects.

Despite its success, Spinner often wonders if participants will show up but is consistently surprised by turnout. She remarked on how positive each event feels by day’s end.

Richards highlighted that each hike brings new experiences with regular attendees introducing friends and family to join them.

Spinner encourages those interested to try it out, assuring support for newcomers who may feel apprehensive about joining.

The name “Darn Tough GFH” originated from a humorous coincidence where all three nurses wore socks from Darn Tough company on their first hike together. Richards commented on its suitability: “In order to be in health care, you need to be darn tough.”
