The New York State Public High School Athletic Association announced on April 7 the recognition of Winter 2026 Scholar-Athlete teams and individual student-athletes for their academic achievements.
This announcement highlights the academic dedication of student-athletes throughout New York State. The program aims to encourage excellence both in sports and academics, celebrating those who manage to excel in both areas.
A total of 3,409 teams earned Scholar-Athlete recognition during the winter season. Additionally, 40,013 individual student-athletes achieved Scholar-Athlete status by maintaining an academic average of at least 90.0 for the marking period. To qualify as a Scholar-Athlete team, at least three-quarters of a team’s roster must have an average grade of 90.0 or higher. Teams that meet this standard receive certificates from NYSPHSAA, while qualifying individuals are awarded pins.
“The Scholar-Athlete program continues to highlight the incredible commitment our student-athletes make to excellence in both the classroom and in competition,” said Dr. Robert Zayas, NYSPHSAA Executive Director. “Balancing academics and athletics at such a high level is a tremendous achievement, and we commend every student and team recognized this winter.”
During this winter season, participation included 647 schools across New York State—about 82 percent of NYSPHSAA’s membership took part in the program. The full list of recognized teams and individuals is available on the NYSPHSAA website.
Looking forward, submissions for Spring 2026 Scholar-Athlete recognition opened on April 6 with a deadline set for May 26, while applications for School of Distinction and School of Excellence will open in early May.
