Paul Tonko, U.S. Congressman representing New York’s 20th district since 2009, recently shared a series of posts on social media addressing national security, labor rights, and the anniversary of Social Security.
On August 11, 2025, Tonko criticized former President Donald Trump’s response to recent events in Washington D.C., contrasting it with actions taken during the January 6 Capitol attack. He wrote, “When a violent mob stormed the Capitol on Jan 6, beating police, smashing windows, and breaking down doors, Trump didn’t bring in the National Guard. But today—with crime at a 30 year low—he’s deploying them and placing DC police under federal control. This isn’t about safety.”
The following day, August 12, Tonko highlighted his participation in an event celebrating Social Security’s milestone anniversary. He stated, “Great to be with @AARPNY in Albany yesterday to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Social Security! It was wonderful to join AARP members to enjoy pizza and hear their stories about what Social Security means to them – highlighting the need to protect this vital earned benefit.”
Later that same day, Tonko addressed concerns regarding labor contracts at federal agencies. He posted: “The VA & EPA have torn up their union contracts, gutting workers’ rights, threatening veterans’ care, and endangering our environment. This authoritarian union-busting is an assault on democracy and working people. We must fight back. We stand with @AFGENational”
Tonko has represented New York’s 20th District in Congress since succeeding Michael McNulty in 2009. Before serving in Congress he was a member of the New York State Assembly from 1983 to 2007. Born in Amsterdam, New York in 1949 and currently residing there at age 73, Tonko graduated from Clarkson University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1971.
