Paul Tonko, a long-serving member of the U.S. Congress representing New York’s 20th district, has been an active voice on social media platforms. On May 1, 2025, he expressed his concern regarding international human rights issues, referencing reports of individuals being detained without due process. Tonko stated, “Sending hundreds of men to be imprisoned in a brutal foreign prison with no due process is reminiscent of a dictatorship, not a democracy.” He emphasized the gravity of the situation by labeling the act as a “horrific tactic of government-enforced disappearances.”
Later that day, Tonko turned his attention to what he views as administrative missteps under President Trump’s leadership. He shared his perspective on personnel appointments, suggesting political rewards amid perceived incompetency. Tonko tweeted, “In Trump’s administration, incompetency doesn’t get you fired—it gets you an ambassadorship to the UN.”
The next day, May 2, 2025, Tonko recounted his visit to Niskayuna High School, where he participated in a naturalization ceremony. He expressed his admiration for the new citizens and their future roles in society. In his tweet, he stated, “The proud new Americans I met today are eager to continue contributing to our communities and our democracy.” He welcomed them warmly into the “American family.”
Tonko, who has represented New York’s 20th district since 2009 and previously served in the New York State Assembly, continues to engage with constituents and the broader public through his social media presence and public events.
