Paul Tonko, a seasoned politician representing New York’s 20th district in the U.S. Congress, has been vocal on social media regarding recent legislative developments. His tweets have addressed the contentious “Big Ugly Bill” being considered by the House of Representatives.
On July 2, 2025, Paul Tonko shared his perspective on the ongoing deliberations over what he refers to as Trump’s “Big Ugly Bill.” He mentioned creating a decision tree to assist his Republican colleagues who are uncertain about their vote. “With the House back in DC to consider Trump’s Big Ugly Bill—I made a decision tree to make it easier for my Republican colleagues who are still conflicted on how to vote.”
The following day, July 3, 2025, Tonko tweeted about overnight efforts by Republicans in the House to advance the bill. He highlighted concerns that this legislation could potentially remove healthcare from 17 million individuals. He also noted that Representative Jeffries was actively speaking against the budget on the House Floor. “Through the night, Republicans in the House worked to ram through their Big, Ugly Bill that rips healthcare away from 17 million. @RepJeffries is speaking on the Floor condemning the ways this disastrous budget betrays the American people and the ideals of our nation.”
Later that day, Tonko expressed criticism towards GOP leadership for hastening the bill’s passage under what he described as a “fake, arbitrary deadline.” He urged Republicans to oppose it due to its perceived negative impacts on various aspects of American life. “GOP leadership is racing to get Trump’s Big Ugly Bill over the finish line to meet a fake, arbitrary deadline. Because they know how bad this bill is for our nation and the American people. For our economy, communities, planet, and millions of lives, Republicans must VOTE NO.”
Paul Tonko has served in Congress since replacing Michael McNulty in 2009 and previously held office in New York State Assembly from 1983 until 2007. Born in Amsterdam, New York in 1949 and an alumnus of Clarkson University with a Bachelor of Science degree obtained in 1971, Tonko remains an influential voice within his district.
