Paul Tonko, a U.S. Congress member representing New York’s 20th district since 2009, recently shared insights on various topics through his social media posts.
On June 7, 2025, Paul Tonko expressed excitement about the return of the Belmont Stakes to Saratoga Race Course. He stated, “Today marks the 157th running of the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga Race Course! Thrilled to see this iconic event return to a track deeply woven into our region’s heritage, allowing visitors from across the world to see all our Capital Region has to offer.”
The following day, June 8, 2025, Tonko criticized the GOP’s budget plans in his post. He remarked that while they claim to fight for lower costs for working families, their budget actually benefits the wealthy at the expense of essential services. He wrote: “The GOP says they’re fighting to lower costs for working families – but their budget hands trillions to the ultra-wealthy while slashing Medicaid and increasing home energy bills. The hypocrisy is staggering.” He directed readers to further details in his newsletter.
On June 9, 2025, Tonko commented on President Trump’s actions regarding states’ rights and women’s rights issues. He stated: “President Trump and his GOP allies only support ‘states’ rights’ when it comes to overriding a woman’s right to choose. Trump’s deployment of the National Guard against Governor Newsom’s wishes is a dangerous escalation that sets an alarming precedent.”
Paul Tonko has been actively involved in politics since serving in the New York State Assembly from 1983 until he joined Congress in 2009. Born in Amsterdam, New York in 1949 and currently residing there, he holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Clarkson University.
