Paul Tonko, a U.S. Congressman representing New York’s 20th district since 2009, addressed issues related to democracy and political leadership in a series of tweets posted on July 21, 2025.
In one post, Tonko wrote, “President Trump and his administration are not invincible. Authoritarians want us to think they are invincible because they want us to feel helpless, hopeless, and cynical – but they aren’t invincible, and we aren’t helpless. 4/11” (July 21, 2025).
He also commented on the importance of integrating democratic practices into daily routines: “Make democracy work part of ordinary life, not an add-on. It is not something that is separate from our values and daily practices. 3/11” (July 21, 2025).
Additionally, Tonko urged vigilance regarding future challenges: “Anticipate the next threat, not just the current one. In other words, don’t chase the ball – go where the ball will be. 8/11” (July 21, 2025).
Tonko has represented New York’s 20th District in Congress since succeeding Michael McNulty in 2009. Prior to his congressional service, he was a member of the New York State Assembly from 1983 to 2007. Born in Amsterdam, New York in 1949 and currently residing there at age 73, Tonko graduated from Clarkson University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1971.
