Paul Tonko, a U.S. Congressman representing New York’s 20th district since 2009, recently shared his thoughts and initiatives on social media. His tweets reflect his engagement with community events and efforts to promote civic participation.
On June 19, 2025, Tonko extended his wishes for Juneteenth celebrations, stating “Wishing a happy Juneteenth to all those celebrating today in our Capital Region and beyond! As we gather to celebrate those who fought for freedom and liberation, let us each commit to finishing the job they started and achieving true equality across our nation.” This message highlights the importance of recognizing historical struggles for freedom while encouraging continued efforts towards equality.
In another tweet dated June 20, 2025, Tonko invited constituents to participate in a virtual panel discussion on democracy. He asked, “What can YOU do to defend our democracy? Join me and democracy experts for a virtual panel designed to foster engaging, practical discussion this Thursday, June 26th at 6 p.m.” He provided a link for pre-registration, emphasizing the event’s interactive nature.
Further clarifying the logistics of the event on June 20, he mentioned that registration is limited but assured accessibility by livestreaming the webinar. Tonko noted “Please note that registration on Zoom is limited to 100 participants, but the webinar will be livestreamed for all on Congressman Tonko’s Facebook Page and YouTube. The video recording will also be freely available after the event!”
Tonko has been serving in Congress since replacing Michael McNulty in 2009. Prior to this role, he served in the New York State Assembly from 1983 until 2007. Born in Amsterdam, New York in 1949, he continues to reside there at age 73.
