Paul Tonko, U.S. Congressman representing New York’s 20th district since 2009, highlighted several community and legislative initiatives in a series of posts on August 26, 2025.

In a morning post, Tonko addressed concerns about the sports gambling industry’s impact on vulnerable populations. He stated, “The sports gambling industry has turned every game, pass & play into a chance to bet. Young adults and vulnerable groups will be hit hardest by this constant barrage. We need standards that protect people and public health. We need to pass my SAFE Bet Act.” (August 26, 2025).

Later that day, Tonko celebrated local educational progress at Albany High School. He wrote, “So proud to be at Albany High School this morning to celebrate completion of the transformative Rebuilding Albany High School project! This is a significant community investment in our students’ future, and I can’t wait to see them thrive here for generations to come.” (August 26, 2025).

In the evening, Tonko reported participating in an event aimed at protecting seniors from scams. He posted, “Today, I joined residents and community members at Schaffer Heights Apartments in Schenectady to host an event to help keep seniors informed on how to spot fraudulent promotions and avoid scammers. Proud to join our partners in presenting this important educational event!” (August 26, 2025).

Tonko has represented New York’s 20th District since replacing Michael McNulty in Congress in 2009 and previously served in the New York State Assembly from 1983 to 2007. Born in Amsterdam, New York in 1949 and currently residing there at age 73, he graduated from Clarkson University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1971.
