Paul Tonko, a long-serving member of the U.S. Congress representing New York’s 20th district since 2009, has been vocal on social media regarding recent legislative developments concerning healthcare and fiscal policy. Through a series of tweets, he expressed his opposition to the Republican party’s proposed budget plan.
On May 12, 2025, Tonko criticized House Republicans for their newly released plan which he claims would remove health insurance from 14 million Americans by cutting hundreds of billions from Medicaid. He characterized the plan as prioritizing tax cuts for billionaires and corporations over public welfare. In his tweet, he stated: “House Republicans just released their plan to kick 14 million Americans off health insurance, slashing hundreds of billions from Medicaid in order to give a massive tax cut to billionaires and big corporations. This isn’t ‘fiscal responsibility’ — it’s cruelty, plain and simple.”
The following day, on May 13, Tonko continued his critique by highlighting personal stories that underscore the potential impact of the proposed budget cuts. He mentioned constituents Noëlle and Nathan whose daughter Isla relies on Medicaid due to a rare genetic disorder. Tonko shared: “Republicans are working today to pass a budget that would strip away health care from millions. I’m fighting against this cruel plan for constituents like Noëlle and Nathan. Their 12-year-old daughter Isla has a rare genetic disorder and has relied on Medicaid for almost 8 years.”
Later that day, Tonko reiterated his opposition to the GOP budget proposal being advanced through committee stages. He emphasized its detrimental effects on his district and advocated for accessible healthcare over benefits for wealthy individuals. He tweeted: “The GOP budget that Republicans are pushing through committee is painful to so many in my district and beyond. We must say NO to lining the pockets of billionaires and YES to providing access to affordable healthcare.”
Tonko was born in Amsterdam, New York in 1949 and holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Clarkson University.
