Pulmonologist and critical care physician Varun tej Gonuguntla, MD, has joined the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Albany Medical Center. Dr. Gonuguntla will treat adults with general pulmonary conditions, with a focus on pleural effusion and bronchiectasis. He will also provide care for patients in intensive care units at both Albany Medical Center and Albany Stratton VA Medical Center.
“Dr. Gonuguntla sees adults with general pulmonary conditions. He has a special interest in pleural effusion (also known as fluid on the lungs) and bronchiectasis, a chronic lung condition where the airways become widened, allowing mucus to build up and increasing the risk of infection. He also cares for hospitalized patients in the intensive care units at Albany Medical Center and Albany Stratton VA Medical Center.”
He is board certified in internal medicine and holds memberships in several professional organizations, including the American Thoracic Society, Society of Critical Care Medicine, and American College of Chest Physicians. Dr. Gonuguntla completed his fellowship training in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Icahn School of Medicine at Elmhurst Hospital Center in Queens, where he served as chief fellow/education fellow during his final year. His residency was completed at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, where he also held the position of chief resident.
Originally from North Carolina, Dr. Gonuguntla earned his medical degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies. He now lives in Niskayuna with his wife Laura Pucillo, MD—who is set to join Albany Medical Center’s pediatric intensive care unit later this month—and their children.
Patients can see Dr. Gonuguntla at Albany Medical Center’s outpatient pulmonary clinic located at 16 New Scotland Ave., Floor 2, in Albany. To learn more or make an appointment, call 518-262-5196.
