Rain or shine, Robin Fontanelli and her team are dedicated to serving the community. Every Thursday evening, they provide hot meals, groceries, and essential supplies to hundreds of residents outside the United Methodist Church on 35th Street. Sidewalk Warriors Troy, founded in 2021 by Ms. Fontanelli, has expanded its reach each year under her leadership.
Ms. Fontanelli collaborates with various partners such as the Regional Food Bank and local grocery stores to gather ingredients for takeout meals and groceries. She also secures donations of essential items like towels and laundry detergent for families in need.
The organization logged over 25,000 service hours last year, assisting more than 13,000 people and distributing over 28,000 meals. Additionally, Sidewalk Warriors has provided Christmas gifts for children and pet food for families.
“She personally treats every beneficiary with compassion and without judgment,” highlighting Ms. Fontanelli’s approach that fosters community understanding.
Sidewalk Warriors connects those it assists with social services providers in healthcare. Ms. Fontanelli emphasizes sustainability by reducing food waste and collecting gently used items such as winter coats.
With a background in finance and experience owning a bridal shop for over 30 years, Ms. Fontanelli brings skills in listening and action to her community work. In 2023, she was a finalist for the Greater Capital Region United Way Philanthropist of the Year.
Robin Fontanelli lives in Latham with her husband Anthony near their daughters’ families.
