Congresswoman Elise Stefanik has called for New York State to require voter identification following the revelation that a non-citizen illegally voted in Saratoga County’s November 2020 election. In her statement, she commented, “Here is yet another reason why New York State should require identification to vote.” She cited a federal court filing regarding the incident involving a 45-year-old non-citizen.
Stefanik pointed out New York’s lack of a voter identification requirement as problematic, stating, “New York remains one of the few states without any form of voter identification requirement. That is unacceptable.” She argued that all legal voters “regardless of party—deserve to know their vote is protected and not canceled out by fraud or abuse.”
The congresswoman criticized Democrats for undermining election integrity, noting their opposition to voter ID laws and support for non-citizen voting. She referenced a decision from March when the New York State Court of Appeals struck down legislation that would have allowed over 800,000 noncitizens to vote in New York City elections. Stefanik described this legislation as an “egregious attack on our Republic” and emphasized that “Voting is a fundamental right reserved for citizens, as clearly outlined in our state constitution.”
Stefanik concluded with a commitment to “fight to safeguard our elections, protect the rights of lawful citizens, and demand accountability from those who try to compromise the security and integrity of our democratic process.” She urged, “We NEED voter ID now.”
