House Republican Leadership Chairwoman Elise Stefanik addressed the House floor to propose a redesignation of the Saratoga National Historical Park. The aim is to rename it as Saratoga National Battlefield Park.
Stefanik emphasized, “I rise today in support of my bipartisan legislation, the Strengthening America’s Turning Point Act.” She highlighted the historical significance of Upstate New York and the North Country, which she described as “the cradle of the American Revolution.”
The proposed change comes as the United States approaches its Semiquincentennial and the 250th anniversary of the Battles of Saratoga. Stefanik remarked on this timing, stating, “There is no better time to recognize the pivotal role this site played in our nation’s war for independence.”
She noted that British General Burgoyne’s campaign ended in defeat at these battles, leading to his surrender to General Horatio Gates. This victory was crucial as it secured foreign support from France and increased domestic backing for American patriots.
The legislation aims to reflect more accurately the site’s historical importance by restoring ‘battlefield’ to its name. Originally named Saratoga Battlefield Park, this element was omitted when it became a national park in 1938.
The proposal has received unanimous support from the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors. Stefanik believes this change will enhance public understanding of its military significance and honor those who sacrificed there.
Stefanik also expressed her gratitude towards Chair Bruce Westerman for his partnership in preserving historic sites. She concluded by urging colleagues to support her bipartisan bill, saying, “Thank you and I yield back.”
