House Republican Leadership Chair Elise Stefanik has called for a review of the Truman Scholarship Foundation’s selection process, citing concerns over perceived left-wing bias. The foundation awards federally-funded scholarships, and Stefanik claims that recent recipients have shown a strong inclination towards progressive causes.
Stefanik released a letter addressed to the foundation’s board of trustees, where she serves as a member after her appointment by Speaker Mike Johnson in April. In the letter, she expressed concern over what she described as “troubling and well-documented” partisan bias in awarding scholarships.
Reports from Breitbart News indicate that the majority of these $30,000 scholarships were awarded to students with progressive backgrounds. Notably, none of the 59 recipients in 2018 identified as conservative. According to data from the College Fix and the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), there is a significant imbalance favoring progressive causes among scholarship recipients between 2021 and 2023.
The congresswoman also highlighted concerns regarding Eva Frazier, a 2025 Truman Scholar who reportedly supported Hamas. This support contradicts values associated with public service and has sparked criticism due to its insensitivity towards many Americans and members of the Jewish community.
Stefanik criticized this situation as morally reprehensible, questioning why taxpayer dollars should reward such positions. She urged her fellow board members to maintain the foundation’s nonpartisan mission and consider rescinding Frazier’s scholarship.
This appeal follows similar concerns raised last year by former Education and Workforce Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx about ideological biases within the foundation.
