House Republican Leadership Chairwoman Elise Stefanik, a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee, has requested Army Secretary Dan Driscoll to expedite funding for critical infrastructure improvements at Fort Drum. This request was made during a session where she emphasized the strategic importance of Fort Drum and its modernization efforts for the U.S. Army.
Stefanik highlighted that nearly every part of Wheeler-Sack Army Airfield has been updated to support rapid deployment forces. However, she pointed out that the airfield’s electric power system is failing and is currently scheduled for funding in FY27. She asked Secretary Driscoll if it could be moved up to FY26.
Driscoll responded, “Congresswoman, I deployed from that runway, so I know it well. I commit that we will take a look at it and follow back up with your office.”
Stefanik also addressed Fort Drum’s reliance on local power since closing its on-post energy facility in 2023. The Army Corps of Engineers suggested a small modular reactor as an optimal solution for energy needs. Stefanik sought Driscoll’s commitment to work towards returning Fort Drum to energy independence.
Driscoll replied similarly, committing to review and follow up quickly on this matter.
In addition, Stefanik discussed electronic warfare training and leveraging the defense ecosystem in upstate New York. She noted that her office secured a provision requiring DOD to review these capabilities between Fort Drum and the Air Force Research Lab in Rome, New York.
General Randy A. George joined the conversation: “I think what we’re looking at is that every installation is going to have to do what we started to do… So we’re going to have to expand all of those systems.”
Stefanik expressed appreciation for ongoing efforts and invited Secretary Driscoll back to Fort Drum: “I’ve hosted previous secretaries of defense…and I would love to host and welcome you back.”
Driscoll responded positively: “It would be an absolute honor…I would be delighted to visit her with you.”
The discussions reflect ongoing efforts by Congresswoman Stefanik and others involved in ensuring Fort Drum remains a vital component of national defense strategy.
