Chief Eric Hawkins, the longest-serving Albany Police Chief in over 40 years, will depart from his role at the beginning of December. During his tenure, Hawkins oversaw significant developments and initiatives within the Albany Police Department (APD), including a decrease in shootings and a notable increase in the recovery of illegal firearms. He also contributed to several community-focused programs such as Pastors on Patrol, Men on a Mission, and the NYS GIVE Initiative.

Under his leadership, APD established New York State’s largest Crime Analysis Center and introduced an internationally-recognized Therapy Dog Program. Other initiatives included the Community Liaison Partnership, which involves city residents in training police academy recruits, and a paid Police Cadet Program. Hawkins also integrated social workers into police operations and implemented substantial infrastructure upgrades to police facilities.

Before joining APD, Hawkins served with the Southfield, Michigan police department where he rose to become Chief in 2012. His educational background includes a Juris Doctor from Western Michigan University Cooley Law School, a Master of Science in Administration from Central Michigan University, a Bachelor of Science in Public Administration from Central Michigan University, and an Associate’s degree in Business Administration from Oakland Community College.

Hawkins is an alumnus of various prestigious law enforcement programs including the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Academy and Eastern Michigan University’s School of Police Staff and Command. His professional affiliations encompass organizations such as the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the FBI National Academy Associates.

Mayor Kathy Sheehan expressed her gratitude for Hawkins' service: “I am extremely grateful to Chief Hawkins for his 6+ years of service to the residents of the City of Albany and the Albany Police Department. During his time as leader of this organization, we have seen incredible work done by the APD.”

She continued: “Gun violence is down, we have taken a record number of illegal guns off our streets, and we are closing homicide cases at nearly double the national average. Chief Hawkins has also doubled down on our commitment to community policing and 21st-century policing strategies to ensure the department continues to foster stronger relationships throughout the City.”

Chief Eric Hawkins reflected on his time with APD: “I thank Mayor Sheehan for offering me the opportunity to serve in Albany and for her unwavering support during both good and challenging times. Mayor Sheehan is the most talented leader I have ever met... The men and women of the Albany Police Department consistently demonstrated during my tenure why they are among the best in the entire country.”

He added: “I will be forever grateful for the hospitality shown to me by members of the Albany community... It was an honor for me to serve in a city I grew to love. Albany is a special place. Albany will forever have a special place in my heart.”

Hawkins will assist Mayor Sheehan with transition plans ahead of his departure.
