On Saturday night, Troy police officers responded to a 911 call reporting a domestic dispute involving a firearm on Ferry Street. According to authorities, an adult female reported that her ex-partner had threatened her with a handgun before fleeing the residence. The suspect, identified as Michael Rodriguez, 41, was later located by officers walking near 6th Avenue.

Police stated that as two patrol officers attempted to make contact with Rodriguez, he fired multiple shots at them. Officers returned fire while seeking cover. The suspect then fled through an apartment building parking area before collapsing and dropping his firearm and illegal narcotics. He was given medical aid by police and Troy Fire Department personnel before being transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

The two officers involved were evaluated at a hospital but were not physically injured. The female victim also did not sustain physical injuries during the incident.

Authorities said various units from the Troy Police Department and New York State Police assisted in the ongoing investigation. The Rensselaer County District Attorney’s Office is handling prosecution of charges against Rodriguez, who is currently in custody at the hospital. Officials noted that Rodriguez is on parole for a 2019 case in Troy related to attempted criminal possession of a weapon.

Mayor Carmella R. Mantello expressed gratitude for the response by law enforcement: “I am grateful to the selfless and dedicated men and women of our Troy Police Department. Tonight’s incident is a stark reminder that at any moment, even a seemingly routine call can escalate into a critical and dangerous situation. I am deeply relieved that our officers and the community are unharmed. We will continue to support our police department as the investigation proceeds and ensure that justice is served accordingly.”

Chief of Police Daniel P. DeWolf added: “While the initial response has concluded, the trauma endured by the involved officers remains. We are committed to the full support of our members, utilizing a variety of available resources as they navigate the days ahead. I remain immensely proud of our department’s members and their commitment to serve our Troy community.”

Officials urged anyone with information about the incident who has not yet spoken with detectives to contact Troy PD at (518) 270-4411.
