The Trump administration has initiated an investigation into the Saratoga Springs City School District in upstate New York. The inquiry focuses on the district’s decision to allow transgender athletes to participate in girls’ sports, a move that defies a federal order prohibiting such participation.
Education Secretary Linda McMahon announced the probe, stating that the district’s actions could be considered discriminatory against female students by permitting “biological boys” to compete in girls’ sports and use their locker rooms. “The Trump Administration has been unrelenting in our effort to ensure that women and girls’ educational experiences are not marred by sex discrimination,” McMahon said. She emphasized that this situation represents a violation of Title IX, which is designed to protect against sex-based discrimination in federally funded schools.
President Trump had previously issued an executive order titled “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports” in January, reinforcing his administration’s stance on this issue.
The investigation was prompted by Representative Elise Stefanik, who criticized the school district for its resolution supporting transgender students’ rights to use facilities and participate in activities consistent with their gender identity. Stefanik sent a letter to Secretary McMahon requesting the investigation, citing concerns about potential discrimination against female athletes.
Stefanik expressed her approval of the administration’s response: “After my strong public advocacy, I want to thank President Donald Trump and Department of Education Secretary Linda McMahon for swiftly opening a formal investigation into the Saratoga Springs City School District for their failure to uphold Title IX protections for women and girls in sports.”
In response, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights has contacted Saratoga Springs Superintendent Michael Patton, requesting documentation related to policies on male student athletes participating in girls’ teams and accessing locker rooms. The department also seeks records of any inquiries or complaints regarding these policies.
