The Albany High School boys’ soccer team gave the state’s 10th-ranked team all it could handle Monday night in the Section 2 Class AA quarterfinals at Shaker, dropping a hard-fought 2-1 decision on a late goal by the hosts.
The seventh-seeded Falcons (7-7-3) trailed 1-0 at halftime after the second-seeded Bison (13-1-2) scored with 1:48 remaining in the half. But the Falcons dominated possession throughout much of the second half, pressing for the equalizer that finally came through Denis Lubila with 21:57 to play.
Albany High came close on several chances over the next 12 minutes, including a header from Charles Bromirski that glanced just wide, and a 40-yard rocket from Ahmad Rahmani that sailed just inches over the crossbar.
Shaker took the lead with 7:54 remaining and held on to advance to the semifinals.
