Megan Gerber, MD, MPH, has been appointed as the assistant dean of health humanities at Albany Medical College. This newly created position aims to integrate arts and social sciences into medical education, research, and clinical practice by exploring the human experience in health and illness.

Dr. Gerber joined Albany Med in 2021 as chief of General Internal Medicine and vice chair of the Department of Medicine for Faculty Development. She has also served as an advising dean and has been a strong advocate for incorporating medical humanities into student efforts.

"Dr. Gerber is a strong proponent of improving the health outcomes and the health care experience for people who have experienced trauma. She has been celebrated for her work," said Alan S. Boulos, MD ’94, The Lynne and Mark D. Groban Distinguished Dean at Albany Medical College. "Her insight and leadership will be invaluable as we teach our medical students the importance of the humanities as an expression of healing, wellness, and insight into the patient perspective."

Dr. Gerber is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and completed her residency training at Strong Memorial Hospital at the University of Rochester in Rochester, N.Y. She earned her Master of Public Health from Harvard School of Public Health, where she also completed a postdoctoral fellowship. Her medical degree was obtained from Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, Pa.

In addition to her medical career, Dr. Gerber is pursuing a Certificate of Professional Achievement in Narrative Medicine through Columbia University School of Professional Studies. An abstract painter herself, her artwork has been featured in publications such as the Journal of General Medicine and Intima: A Journal of Narrative Medicine. She is also known for editing “Trauma-informed Healthcare Approaches: A Guide for Primary Care.”
