Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Elise Stefanik has taken a firm stance in demanding action to ensure the safety of the Jewish community at Columbia University. Stefanik addressed a letter to Department of Education Secretary Miguel Cardona, Department of Justice Attorney General Merrick Garland, and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, urging them to address the ongoing harassment and threats faced by Jewish students and community members on the university's campus.
Stefanik's letter highlights the gravity of the situation, stating, "There is clear and convincing evidence that students at Columbia have been targeted because they are Jewish, and the university has allowed this to persist without consequence." She called for transparency by requesting the Department of Education to publish the findings of the Title VI investigation initiated by the Biden Administration after the October 7th attack.
Furthermore, Stefanik emphasized the need for accountability, urging the Department of Education to revoke any federal funding allocated to Columbia University and similar institutions implicated in discriminatory practices. She also urged the Department of Homeland Security to take action in accordance with the Immigration and Nationality Act, which prohibits individuals endorsing terrorist activities from entering the United States.
In her letter, Stefanik asserted, "Consequences are needed for those who are calling for terrorism and violent attacks." She emphasized the importance of enforcing existing laws to combat the spread of antisemitic actions and ideologies on campus. Stefanik called for strong leadership and decisive action to safeguard the affected individuals and restore peace within the university community.
