Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan expressed her satisfaction with the recently enacted FY 2024-25 New York State Budget, highlighting the positive impact it will have on various aspects of the community.
In her statement, Mayor Sheehan, also serving as the President of the New York Conference of Mayors, commended the budget for allocating an additional $50 million in unrestricted state aid for cities, villages, and towns, marking the first increase in 15 years. She emphasized that this financial boost will enable the city to enhance public safety by keeping police officers and firefighters on the streets, addressing environmental concerns related to the climate crisis, and carrying out essential infrastructure improvements.
The Mayor lauded the budget's support for proven gun violence prevention programs such as SNUG, which contributed to a 30% decrease in shootings in 2023. She also highlighted provisions aimed at assisting small businesses in combatting organized retail theft and empowering municipalities to combat illegal dispensaries. Additionally, the budget extends protections for tenants, raises income thresholds for TAP grants benefiting low- and middle-class students, and creates new workforce opportunities in the South End through investments in MAPP.
Mayor Sheehan further praised the budget's initiatives to bolster the hospitality industry and small businesses, including the continuation of alcohol-to-go services. Notably, the budget includes crucial investments in swimming pools statewide, as well as in the New York State Museum and Palace Theatre.
Acknowledging the advocacy and support of Governor Kathy Hochul, Senator Neil Breslin, Assemblymember Patricia Fahy, and Assemblymember John McDonald, Mayor Sheehan expressed gratitude for their commitment to advancing Albany's interests. She emphasized the importance of ongoing collaboration with state leaders to address longstanding issues, such as the City of Albany's request for Capital City Funding.
While Mayor Sheehan expressed disappointment that Capital City Funding was not made permanent in the budget, she affirmed her dedication to working with Governor Hochul and legislative partners to rectify this matter. She concluded by thanking Governor Hochul and the Capital City Delegation for their efforts in ensuring a prosperous future for Albany, characterized by inclusivity and progress.
