Mary E. Adams, the owner of Century 21 Adams Real Estate and Mayor of the Village of Babylon, has had a long history of service to her community. Prior to her tenure as mayor, she served as Trustee for the village.
Adams' leadership was instrumental during the recovery efforts following Hurricane Sandy's devastation of the waterfront community. She served on the New York Rising Community Reconstruction Committee and was responsible for Parks and Recreation programming. Additionally, she was involved in several committees including the Budget Committee, Newcomers Committee, and the Babylon Village Volunteer Corps.
When faced with the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, Adams quickly organized a task force within the village to respond to community needs. She expedited outdoor dining permits and regularly held Zoom meetings to keep residents and business owners informed.
Under her direction, Mayor Adams expanded programs for children and families. One such initiative was organizing the village's first Pickleball Tournament which now boasts over 100 teams from across Long Island and Queens.
Adams also played a key role in earning Babylon Village its first-ever "Tree City, USA" designation through her work with the Babylon Beautification Society. This recognition not only added value to local neighborhoods but also elevated community pride.
In addition to her public service roles, Adams has been a small business owner for three decades. She joined the Chamber of Commerce where she took on a leadership role to promote business growth and revenue generation. Among her many positions were Treasurer of Babylon Beautification Society, Chairperson of Babylon Tuna Club - being its first female chairperson - Past President of Long Island Board of Realtors and Multiple Listing Service Past President of Suffolk County. She also held chairperson roles for various committees under New York State Association of Realtors and Long Island Board of Realtors.
Adams assumed mayoral duties in October 2020 after the sudden passing away of her predecessor. In June 2021, she faced a personal challenge when diagnosed with endometrial cancer. Despite undergoing surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation treatments, Adams continued to run her real estate business and serve as Mayor. This experience, she said, revealed her true strength.
