In a recent op-ed published in The Saratogian, Congresswoman Elise Stefanik discussed her efforts to rename the Saratoga National Historical Park to Saratoga National Battlefield Park.
Stefanik emphasized the importance of Upstate New York and the North Country in American history, noting that these areas are "known as the cradle of the American Revolution" and home to numerous significant battlefields and historic sites. As Co-Chair of the Congressional Battlefield Caucus, she highlighted her commitment to preserving these sites for future generations.
In July, Stefanik introduced bipartisan legislation named the Strengthening America’s Turning Point Act. This bill aims to restore the park's original name, which was changed when it became a national park in 1938. The proposal has received unanimous support from the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors.
"The historic site was originally named the Saratoga Battlefield Park," wrote Stefanik. "This small but significant fix...will help honor the Battles of Saratoga that took place at the site and clearly identify the site as America’s Turning Point in our war for independence."
She also underscored how renaming the park would enhance public understanding of its historical significance and honor those who sacrificed their lives there. The Battles of Saratoga were pivotal during the American Revolution, leading to foreign support from France and boosting domestic morale.
With America's 250th anniversary approaching, Stefanik expressed her determination to see this legislation passed. She concluded by stating her ongoing commitment to preserving historical sites across the nation.
