Congresswoman Elise Stefanik issued a statement in response to the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic’s memo regarding former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s nursing home policies during the COVID-19 pandemic. The memo addresses the deaths of thousands of seniors.

“We have only scratched the surface on the fatal actions of disgraced Former Governor Andrew Cuomo and his corrupt administration in their criminal COVID cover-up that cost the lives of over 15,000 vulnerable New York seniors in nursing homes across the state,” said Congresswoman Elise Stefanik. “I have been at the forefront of demanding accountability for Cuomo’s crimes from calling for independent investigations, spearheading countless letters to HHS and the DOJ with New York GOP members, and leading questions during a congressional interview of the disgraced governor. On behalf of the countless families who continue to mourn the unnecessary loss of their loved ones, disgraced former Governor Andrew Cuomo will be held accountable.”

Congresswoman Stefanik has been active since 2020 in holding former Governor Cuomo accountable for his role in these deaths. Her efforts include advocating for affected families and seeking justice for their losses.

In June 2024, Stefanik led House Republicans during a transcribed interview with Cuomo concerning his nursing home order. In March 2024, she released a statement following a subpoena issued by the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic for Cuomo's deposition. Additionally, Stefanik participated in oversight hearings in September 2022 and May 2023 examining Cuomo’s nursing home directive.

Stefanik has also sent multiple letters addressing related concerns. In July 2022, she wrote to Governor Kathy Hochul requesting information on COVID deaths in nursing homes and related communications. In December 2021, she urged Hochul to remove Jim Malatras as Chancellor of SUNY due to his involvement in discrediting one of Cuomo’s victims and withholding data on COVID-19 nursing home deaths.

Further actions include leading a letter signed by New York's Republican delegation asking for information on why an investigation into Cuomo was not opened (August 2021), requesting an investigation into civil rights violations (March 2021), calling for subpoenas (February 2021), and urging a review by New York Attorney General Letitia James (June 2020).
