Congresswoman Elise Stefanik has published an op-ed in Newsweek, calling for accountability from former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo regarding his administration's handling of COVID-19, specifically a nursing home directive that allegedly resulted in the deaths of over 15,000 seniors. Stefanik's article coincides with Cuomo's scheduled testimony before the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic.

In her piece, Stefanik claims Cuomo and his senior aides were responsible for issuing an executive order that mandated COVID-positive patients be readmitted to nursing homes, exposing vulnerable residents to the virus. She states, "There is no question that Andrew Cuomo is responsible for the deaths of innocent nursing home seniors. He must be held accountable."

Stefanik asserts that the Cuomo administration intentionally underreported nursing home deaths to downplay the impact of their directive. She cites a report by New York Attorney General Letitia James, which found a nearly 50 percent undercount in fatalities. The congresswoman emphasizes her commitment to transparency and accurate data reporting to hold Cuomo accountable.

The op-ed also addresses Cuomo's $5 million book deal, suggesting it provided a financial incentive for him to cover up the true impact of his policies. Stefanik highlights allegations that state employees were directed to work on the book during their official duties.

Stefanik criticizes Cuomo for granting legal immunity to nursing home executives connected to his political donors, alleging this further illustrates corruption within his administration. She pledges continued advocacy for families affected by these policies and insists on independent investigations and federal oversight.

House Republicans, according to Stefanik, are committed to ensuring accountability and ethical governance as part of their platform. "Our investigation is driven by a commitment to uncovering the truth and ensuring accountability in governance," she concludes.

The full op-ed can be accessed via Congresswoman Stefanik’s official website.
