Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Elise Stefanik voted to pass the End Woke Higher Education Act, legislation aimed at upholding Americans’ constitutional rights and restoring viewpoint diversity throughout postsecondary education. The package includes her bill, the Freedom of Association in Higher Education Act.
“An important bill I led, the Freedom of Association in Higher Education Act, passed today within the End Woke Higher Education Act to ensure essential protections for single-sex organizations on college campuses and to protect students who join them from discrimination. My legislation will allow students to continue to flourish in these unique environments and build supportive communities that aid in their development into young adults,” said Congresswoman Elise Stefanik.
The Freedom of Association in Higher Education Act aims to preserve student choice, provide equal treatment for all student organizations, and protect single-sex spaces on and off campus.
Single-sex organizations have faced unequal treatment compared to other student groups and sports teams on college campuses, including at Stefanik’s alma mater Harvard University. These rules include attempts to force organizations to become co-ed against their will, inappropriate control over membership selection processes, and collective sanctions imposed on thousands of students within a larger organization’s community as punishment for the conduct of a few individuals.
