The report outlines potential negative impacts on the county and its residents due to the decision made by Governor Kathy Hochul.
Stefanik criticized Governor Hochul's plan, stating, "As I said when failed Governor Kathy Hochul unveiled her disastrous plan to close the Great Meadows Correctional Facility, her careless prison closures will end in disaster for the Empire State." She further added that this decision could result in a loss of 2,419 jobs and significant revenue for Washington County as families may relocate in search of employment. This relocation might lead to Fort Ann losing nine percent of its students, which could cause an increase in school taxes and disrupt class sizes.
In August 2024, Congresswoman Stefanik led a bipartisan rally aimed at preventing the closure of Great Meadows Correctional Facility. She attributes this issue to what she describes as Governor Hochul's "radical Far Left Democrat agenda."
The closure has sparked concern about its broader impact on Upstate New York communities and their economic stability.
