After two years of advocacy, Assemblyman Scott Bendett is celebrating the passage of legislation designating New York as a Purple Heart State. The bill, which had been stalled in the Assembly, has now secured approval. This move solidifies New York's commitment to honoring Purple Heart recipients.
"This is a proud day for New York and a long-overdue recognition for the brave men and women who have shed blood in service to our country," said Bendett. "For two years, I have fought to see this bill passed, and I am grateful that New York is finally taking this step to show our unwavering respect for our wounded veterans."
The legislation holds personal significance for Bendett. His grandfather, Julius Bendett, was wounded in combat during World War II and awarded the Purple Heart. Despite being shot in battle, Julius was transferred to Paris where he learned to make false teeth—a skill that became his career.
"My grandfather’s story is just one of thousands across this state—stories of courage, sacrifice, and resilience," Bendett added. "By making New York a Purple Heart State, we ensure that these heroes receive the recognition and respect they deserve."
With this legislation's passage, New York joins other states committed to honoring Purple Heart recipients, strengthening its dedication to veterans and their families.
