Fourth-year medical students across the United States, including 123 at Albany Medical College, participated in Match Day today. This event is a pivotal moment in their careers as they discover where they will continue their medical training.
At Albany Medical College, 41 students were matched to programs within New York State. Forty percent of this year's class will pursue primary care specialties such as family medicine, internal medicine, medicine/pediatrics, pediatrics, and obstetrics and gynecology. Fourteen students will remain at Albany Medical Center for their residencies.
"Match Day is a culmination of years of hard work and dedication and as faculty, we share our students’ anticipation and excitement," said Alan S. Boulos, MD, ’94, The Lynne and Mark D. Groban, MD, ’67 Distinguished Dean of Albany Medical College. "We are extraordinarily proud of our students’ accomplishments and wish them well as they take the next steps toward their careers as medical professionals. We also look forward to welcoming the 128 future physicians throughout the country who learned today that they matched to Albany Medical Center for their residency training."
The matching process involves fourth-year medical students applying to several residency programs while these programs rank the students they have interviewed. The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) then matches students with programs.
The Albany Med Health System successfully filled residency positions in various programs participating in the Match. These include anesthesiology, emergency medicine, family medicine (including Saratoga Hospital), general surgery, preliminary surgery, internal medicine (including preliminary), medicine/pediatrics, neurology, neurosurgery, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedic surgery, otolaryngology, pathology, pediatrics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, plastic surgery, psychiatry, radiology (including integrated vascular radiology), and vascular surgery. Urology and ophthalmology filled positions through the separate SF Match.
Following graduation from medical school, physicians enter residency programs for an additional three to seven years of training. Albany Medical College's commencement ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, May 8 at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. Residency assignments are set to begin in July.
