As part of an expanding initiative to enhance care for older adults, Dr. Meryl Gold has joined Albany Medical Center's Department of Surgery within the new Division of Metabolic and Perioperative Support. Dr. Gold specializes in treating patients over 65 who are undergoing or have undergone surgeries or have experienced trauma such as broken ribs or hip fractures.

Dr. Gold collaborates with surgical teams to co-manage medical care during hospital stays, assists families with complex decisions, reviews medications, and helps with post-discharge plans. She is part of a team led by Dr. Andrew Coates, which began five years ago in collaboration with the Division of Acute Care Surgery and Critical Care to offer specialized support for significant illnesses.

“Dr. Gold brings unique knowledge and impressive credentials to this critically important position,” said Dr. Coates, noting his previous work experience with her during her residency. “It requires a deep knowledge of how to coordinate care with many different care teams, as well as the ability to guide complex and subtle communication, which could be related to a challenging diagnosis, or difficult care planning, or a deeply distraught family.”

Dr. Gold is board certified in internal medicine and completed a fellowship in geriatric medicine at Brown University in Providence, R.I., along with a residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at Albany Medical Center. Her medical degree was obtained from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford, Maine.
