On January 21, 2025, Paul Tonko criticized former President Donald Trump for his decision to pardon individuals involved in the January 6 Capitol riots. He stated, "Yesterday, Donald Trump once again showed his contempt for our system of justice and our democracy by pardoning more than 1,500 rioters who stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021, many of whom were convicted of violent attacks on law enforcement officers."

Later that day, Tonko commented on the political and economic climate following an inauguration event. He expressed concerns over wealth concentration in governance by tweeting: "Trump promised us a new golden era, but instead we got a new gilded age. Yesterday’s inauguration sent a clear message to working Americans – the richest men in the world are in control of your government and your future. Democrats are fighting to put power back in your hands."

On January 22, 2025, Tonko addressed reproductive rights in light of the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Emphasizing the importance of abortion care access, he stated: "As we reflect on the 52nd anniversary of #RoevWade — the third without Roe — the need to expand and protect abortion care is as clear as ever. I'll never stop fighting to ensure that patients, not politicians, have the freedom to make their own healthcare choices."
