East Greenbush, N.Y. – The Watertown Daily Times recently reported on the finalization of the federal budget, highlighting a 3% increase in defense spending and significant investments at Fort Drum, including substantial pay raises for service members.
The Further Consolidated Appropriations Act, championed by Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, secured essential funding for Fort Drum and the 10th Mountain Division. Rep. Stefanik emphasized the importance of the funding in upgrading equipment and fielding infantry units, stating, "This critical funding will go towards upgrading equipment and fielding infantry units."
In response to the budget allocations, David J. Zembiec of Advocate Drum noted, "This funding expands Fort Drum’s capabilities and mission readiness, which certainly enhances its military value to the Army and DOD, thereby helping to ensure its continued presence here in the north country."
However, not all voices were in favor of the finalized federal budget. Rep. Claudia L. Tenney expressed concerns about the bill, labeling it a "spending monstrosity" that fails to address key issues and may contribute to increasing national debt. Tenney highlighted some positives in the bill but ultimately criticized its overall impact on the economy and federal spending.
The federal budget, signed into law by President Joseph R. Biden, marks the end of a prolonged budget fight and includes various provisions aimed at bolstering national defense and military readiness. The investments at Fort Drum underscore the ongoing commitment to supporting service members and enhancing the capabilities of military installations across the country.
