The Albany County Department for Children, Youth and Families will implement the Family Assessment Response (FAR) to address reports concerning child safety. This approach differs from traditional methods by engaging with families to assess their strengths and needs, working collaboratively with parents to identify solutions.
FAR is solution-focused and family-led, aiming to strengthen families through referrals to services and resources tailored to their needs. The process does not result in a formal determination of the validity of the initial report but prioritizes the safety and well-being of children.
“The Department is very excited to implement Family Assessment Response for child protective services. We believe that this strength-based and engaging approach will provide families with the services and supports they are in need of without the need to conduct an investigation,” said Moira Manning, Albany County Department for Children, Youth and Families Commissioner.
Eighteen counties across New York State use FAR for families referred to the Statewide Central Register. Starting June 24th, Albany County will offer two responses to Child Protective Services (CPS) referrals: a traditional CPS investigation or a Family Assessment Report. The department will maintain four FAR units with approximately 20 staff members assigned to these cases.
Both FAR and traditional investigations fall under Child Protective Services, with FAR caseworkers being mandated reporters. The primary goal of both approaches is child safety. If new safety concerns arise during the assessment process, a new report may be necessary, which caseworkers will communicate transparently. The department aims to support families by building on their strengths and developing sustainable solutions for child safety.
