Mayor Kathy Sheehan has appointed Brendan J. Cox as the interim Chief of the Albany Police Department. "Brendan Cox is a tested leader who is highly respected in the community and comes with the credentials to lead our law enforcement department once again," Sheehan stated, expressing confidence in his leadership and commitment to public service.
Cox, who has served over 23 years in the Albany Police Department, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity. “I am so honored and humbled to once again lead the members of the Albany Police Department,” he said, committing to enhancing public safety and reducing crime.
Born and raised in Albany, Cox joined the department in 1994. He has held various roles, including overseeing Special Operations and serving on the Albany Community Police Advisory Committee. His leadership was instrumental in making Albany one of the first cities to implement LEAD (Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion).
The U.S. Department of Justice recognized Cox's dedication to community policing by selecting Albany for its “Advancing 21st Century Policing” initiative.
Cox will serve until approximately 2026 due to an impending mayoral transition. His appointment reflects his familiarity with the department and ability to navigate this transitional period.
Albany Common Council members expressed their support for Cox’s return. Kelly Kimbrough praised his dedication to public service, while Ginnie Farrell highlighted his focus on public safety and community engagement. Tom Hoey emphasized Cox's knowledge and experience with community policing strategies.
