Paul Tonko, a U.S. Congressman representing New York's 20th district since 2009, recently took to social media to express his views on several pressing issues. Tonko, who succeeded Michael McNulty and previously served in the New York State Assembly, addressed concerns regarding civil liberties and fiscal policies through a series of tweets.

On March 12, 2025, Tonko tweeted about the detention of Mahmoud Khalil, stating: "Here are the facts: Mahmoud Khalil is a LEGAL U.S. resident. He has been charged with 0 crimes. Yet he is being detained by this administration in a blatant rejection of the First Amendment right to free speech." He criticized the action as "unlawful, undemocratic, and un-American."

In another tweet posted on March 13, 2025, Tonko expressed readiness among Democrats to prevent government shutdowns: "My fellow Democrats and I are ready and willing to pass a clean 4-week funding extension that keeps the doors of our government open..." urging cooperation from House Republicans.

Additionally, on March 13, he voiced opposition to certain fiscal measures favored by Republicans: "Republicans in Congress want to give a blank check to Elon Musk." His stance suggests concern over unchecked financial support for private enterprises.
