On March 22, 2025, Tonko voiced his opposition to actions he attributes to Donald Trump and Elon Musk concerning social services. He stated: "As Donald Trump and Elon Musk plot to eliminate services and strip away benefits from hardworking Americans, I have one message for this administration: keep your hands off our Social Security." Tonko provided a link for further details on how he is addressing these issues.

In another tweet dated March 25, 2025, Tonko commented on an alleged intelligence breach involving classified war plans. He remarked: "Exposing classified war plans in a group chat isn’t just amateurish - it’s a catastrophic, criminal intelligence breach that puts all our men and women in uniform at risk. Everyone involved in this fiasco must resign or be fired immediately."

Later the same day, Tonko criticized the Department of Defense under Trump's administration for removing a webpage honoring Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. Henry Johnson. He asserted: "Trump’s DoD claims to honor those who have gone above and beyond the call of duty - so why did they remove a webpage recognizing the service of Albany resident and Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. Henry Johnson? The Trump administration must rectify this heinous error immediately."
