Congresswoman Elise Stefanik has reintroduced the bipartisan Border Airport Fairness Act to designate Plattsburgh International Airport as a Port of Entry (POE). This measure is expected to save the airport approximately $800,000 per year.

Stefanik stated, “The Border Airport Fairness Act will save Plattsburgh International Airport hundreds of thousands of dollars in costs by ensuring that it receives the designation it deserves.” She emphasized that the legislation aims to provide the necessary resources for the airport to meet transportation needs in Upstate New York and for North Country families, while also supporting tourism in the area.

Congressman Vicente Gonzalez from Texas expressed his support for the bill by stating, “As our region continues to rapidly grow, it’s essential that our airports and transportation infrastructure not only keep up with increased demand for commercial travel but also continue to support critical federal operations.” He views the legislation as an investment in the future.

Robert Hall, Plattsburgh International Airport Committee Chairperson, commented on the bill's favorable impact, stating, "Removing the user-fee burden will help us put those dollars back into operations, maintenance, and future improvements," while appreciating Stefanik’s continued support.

Mark Henry, Clinton County Legislative Chairperson, noted the economic significance of the airport and the advantage of eliminating the user-fee status, allowing for better infrastructure investment. He commended Stefanik for her leadership in fostering regional competitiveness and sustainability.

Garry Douglas, President of the North Country Chamber of Commerce, remarked, "This bill is only fair, treating Plattsburgh International the same as so many other airports." He highlighted the permanent securing of the airport's Customs operation and the freeing of resources for development and improvements.

Plattsburgh International Airport is one of two primary commercial service airports near the Northern or Southern Border tagged as user-fee airports. This status means the airport must cover costs for U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) services, including security screenings and immigration inspections.

Although Plattsburgh International Airport meets the CBP’s criteria for a port of entry, it has not been designated as such, leading to increased expenses for both the airport and its travelers.
