Toy Foundation grant supports child life specialists at children’s hospital

Child life specialists at the Massry Family Children’s Emergency Center, part of the Bernard & Millie Duker Children’s Hospital, have new resources to support pediatric behavioral health patients during their hospital stays. A $15,000 grant from The Toy Foundation enabled the purchase of toys, games, books, arts and crafts materials, and comfort items suitable for these young patients.

This initiative aligns with the opening of a new area known as The Cove. This space is designed for patients awaiting psychiatric evaluation and inpatient placement in the region. Nicole Friedman, RN, a nurse manager, and Lindsay Burnop, a child life specialist in the pediatric emergency department, have observed improvements in patient mood and behavior due to these items.

“I think having access to more fun things to do has led to fewer outbursts,” said Friedman. “I’ve noticed they’re spending more time together and playing games, which I think keeps them calmer and more relaxed.”

Burnop added that some patients who previously refused to use crayons are now engaging with oil pastels as an alternative drawing option. She also noted that group activities in The Cove have encouraged positive interactions among patients.

“I had a situation where patients were bored... I was able to redirect them and have them play a game together," Burnop explained. "Having these fun activities and games changed the trajectory of the situation and led to a positive outcome.”

A special closet in The Cove stores all items purchased with the grant. Burnop mentioned that staff can easily access these resources: “The items are easily accessible... there are signs posted... how to identify the level of safety of each item."

Overall, this development is beneficial for both patients and staff at The Cove.
