ALBANY, NY – Mayor Kathy Sheehan, Department of General Services Commissioner Sergio Panunzio, and Deputy Commissioner Frank Zeoli have announced a new waste reduction and reuse program that aims to reduce what ends up in the City’s Rapp Road Landfill.

The recycling symbol consists of three arrows, and each arrow represents a different aspect of the recycling process. The first arrow represents the concept of reduce, the second represents reuse, and the third represents recycle. In 2021, the City of Albany announced its Waste Less, Recycling More campaign that established two sides of the triangle. To establish the third side of the triangle – reuse – the City of Albany is proud to announce Drop It - Swap It. 

Drop It - Swap It is a free community event where the public's invited to bring clean, reusable, portable items such as clothing, housewares, games, books, & toys that you no longer need, and take home something new-to-you, free! Residents do not have to bring something to take something.

Drop It - Swap It will be held on Saturday, June 24th from 12pm to 4pm at the Metropolitan Baptist Church located at 105 Second Street, Albany, 12210. The event is open to the public. 

Item swaps are a key pillar of sustainability by extending the life cycle of household items, reducing the demand for textiles and other items, and diverting them from landfills – all to help reduce climate change and protect our environment.

The Department of General Services will introduce tools and resources over the next year that residents of the City of Albany can use to lead a more sustainable life by reducing the amount of waste they create and establishing habits that will encourage reuse.
