Assemblyman Scott Bendett (R,C-Sand Lake) hosted a “Finding Hope” panel discussion on Friday, April 12 in Valatie to address the overdose crisis in New York. The event brought together a diverse group of individuals, including Sen. Michelle Hinchey (D,WF-41st S.D.), Columbia County Sheriff Donald Krapf, Dr. William Murphy, medical professionals, treatment specialists, first responders, law enforcement, impacted family members, and individuals in recovery.
Bendett emphasized the importance of collective action in tackling the overdose crisis, stating, "As elected representatives and community stakeholders, it is our collective duty to address the pressing issues that plague our communities. The conversations we had today were sobering, but not without hope."
The discussion highlighted the challenges faced by first responders, the impact of opioid addiction on individuals and families, and the need for innovative strategies to combat the crisis. Bendett commended the efforts of families and individuals in recovery, acknowledging their hard work and resilience.
Addressing the issue of opioid addiction, a statement from an unknown source noted, "Many of those addicted to these drugs were first exposed to opioids through prescribed pain medications. However, as individuals develop a use disorder, they seek access to cheaper and more available heroin and fentanyl."
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), opioid overdose deaths in New York surged by 351% from 2010 to 2021. The use of naloxone, a medication used to reverse opioid overdose, also saw an 83% increase in administration during emergency service calls statewide in 2021 compared to 2015.
The panel discussion shed light on the growing prevalence of fentanyl and its analogs in illicit drugs, posing a significant risk to individuals who may unknowingly consume these potent substances. With the overdose crisis continuing to impact communities across the state, collaborative efforts and support for those in recovery remain crucial in addressing this pressing public health issue.
