Paul Tonko, a U.S. Congressman representing New York's 20th district, has recently expressed his concerns and actions through a series of tweets. These posts highlight his commitment to equality and justice for LGBTQIA+ individuals, as well as his opposition to proposed changes in the Department of Education.

On February 7, 2025, Paul Tonko emphasized the importance of dignity and respect for LGBTQIA+ individuals. He stated that they are "part of every community" and deserve protection under the law. He declared his intent to fight against any dangerous actions threatening these rights, affirming that "equality and justice are non-negotiable." "LGTBQIA+ people – including trans individuals – are part of every community, and like everyone, they deserve dignity, respect, and protection under the law. That’s why I will fight these dangerous actions with everything I have – because equality and justice are non-negotiable."

Later that day, he addressed concerns about potential cuts to educational programs by Elon Musk and associates. Tonko claimed that their efforts could lead to significant reductions in Title I funding, special education programs, and other essential services relied upon by millions of children. "Elon Musk and his cronies are trying to shut down the Department of Education – threatening devastating cuts to Title I, special education programs, and other services that millions of our children depend on."

In a subsequent tweet posted at nearly the same time on February 7th, Tonko shared his active involvement in opposing these educational changes. He mentioned joining colleagues at the Department of Education's doors to demand discussions with representatives linked to Elon Musk's initiatives but faced resistance when access was denied. Despite this setback, he remains resolute in safeguarding children's futures. "That’s why today, I joined a group of my colleagues at the doors of @usedgov to demand a meeting with Elon’s agents and put a stop to their campaign of destruction. Once again, the doors were barred – but I will never be deterred in the fight to protect our children’s future."
